"Lower Prut" UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

With a total area of over 14.7 thousand hectares, the Biosphere Reserve “Lunca Prutului” comprises nine localities south of Cahul, namely : Crihana Veche, Manta, Vadul lui Isac, Colibasi, Brânza, Văleni, Slobozia Mare, Câşlița-Prut and Giurgiulesti village, including 824 hectares of forest.

Here live no less than 200 birds species, 40 species of mammals and more than 300 types of plants. Many of these are included in the Red Book of Moldova as endangered species

The Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve represents the entrance to the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. It lies on the flyway route for more than a hundred birds species and is the nesting site and resting / wintering place for many of the passing migratory birds.

The territory of the natural park has been declared a Site of Community Importance (SCI) ROSCI0105, as an integral part of the European ecological network Nature 2000, and the entire territory of the park has been designated as a Special Area of ​​Avifauna Protection (SPA) within the European ecological network Nature 2000 , by Government Decision’s no. 1284 / 24.10.2007.
